About This Site

There are a few technical things going on with this website that might enhance your visit if you know about them. For example, it's possible to hide the side-bar, resize the text, and get decent printed versions of the pages.

The Style Switcher

This website uses a style switcher to toggle between displaying the side-bar (with information about the current area of the site) and hiding the side-bar (to give more screen real estate to the articles). If the side-bar is hidden, you can still navigate by using the main menu instead. The style switcher is the work of Paul Sowden, at A List Apart.

Resizing Text

This website is designed using relative sizes for the text and the layout. Using default font sizes, it should fit neatly into a browser window 800 pixels wide. If you prefer a larger font size, you can resize the text (hold down CTRL and scroll your mousewheel up or down). This will change the whole dimension of the website, so you may need to resize your browser window or start scrolling...

Printing

The website uses a dedicated print stylesheet for styling its pages when they're sent to a printer. The colours are reduced to mostly black and white, and the page header, footer and menus are removed. You should end up with just the article itself, resized to fit to your paper. Hopefully this is what you're after!

Web Standards

This site is designed to use semantic XHTML (that means that elements on the page should be marked up sensibly, so headers are marked as headers, and lists are marked as lists, and so on) and with content separated from presentation by using cascading style sheets (CSS). All of that might not mean a lot to you, but what it does mean is that you should be able to read the website on a mobile phone, screen reader, or using your own stylesheets.
